Launched in i994, the East Boston Greenway Project is part of Boston Natural Areas Fund (now the Trustees of Reservations)'s initiative "Greenways to Boston Harbor: the Neponset River Greenway and the East Boston Greenway". The objective of the East Boston Greenway Oral History Project was to mark the construction of the Greenway by illustrating the meaning and value of what will become the Greenway through the voices of those who live or have lived and worked here. As community residents began to participate in Greenway design meetings their desire ro incorporate the history into the design was consistently voiced. It was the task of the community to help the Greenway designers to evoke these images, to interpret history, to create a sense of place--the oral history project's goals was to provide the tools and information to the designers by giving voice to the ideas. to the ideas, memories, and places that hold meaning for East Boston residents.
